Course Description
The purpose of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Program, as taught at CLTCC, is as follows:
- To maintain the integrity and standards required by the State of Louisiana to inspect a vehicle.
- To familiarize the students with the MVI manual. Students read the MVI manual in class. Questions are asked and examples are made throughout the reading.
- The class is taken outside to do practical training. Public vehicles- receive training on inspecting passenger cars or trucks. Commercial- receive training on inspecting big trucks, school buses, and trailers. The students must successfully pass the 1st day before they are allowed to take the 2nd-day class.
- A log sheet is completed in the classroom.
- A test is given. Tests are graded as each student finishes.
- Upon successfully completing the test, the students are given a certificate of completion.
- After completing all requirements, the student can apply for their inspector’s license from the Louisiana State Police Motor Vehicle Department.
Motor Vehicle Inspection - General (Non-Commercial)
Covers passenger vehicles, light trucks, trailers- under 10,000 lbs. GVWR, and RV’s. This program offers an 8-hour course to prepare students to be able to obtain their “License to Inspect” at an authorized inspection station.
Motor Vehicle Inspection - Commercial
- Covers trucks, trailers & vehicles over 10,000 lbs. GVWR (commercial) and school buses.
- Louisiana State Police requires that all Commercial Vehicle Inspectors have current ASE certifications in Diesel and/or School bus repairs or years of experience. Proof of certifications must be provided to the State Police for review upon application to become a commercial vehicle inspector before the application is approved. Applicants must have at least five (5) years of experience as an ASE certified diesel mechanic or equivalent years of experience.
Note: You will need to complete the General Vehicle Inspector course prior to taking this course. This will give you the required 16-hour Commercial Vehicle Inspector course.
Eligibility Requirements
- 18 years old
- Have a valid driver's license
- Commercial students must take Non-Commercial course first
- Can enroll in Commercial course the day before
Class Details
- Each certification class is one day; offered once a month
- Commercial Inspectors must take the General (Non-Commercial) prior to taking the Commercial course
- In order to accommodate this requirement, scheduling usually follows: General (Non-Commercial) on Friday, Commercial on Saturday
- All classes are held at Winnfield Campus
- Note: In additiona to CLTCC, only BRCC and Fletcher CC offer this training statewide.
